MoGo Rideshare offers free transportation in Mobile, expands access to employment

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Car rides across Mobile but make them free.

Three months ago, the Mobile Chamber of Commerce partnered with Via Transportation to help Mobilians get to their destination.

Since starting, MoGo Rideshare averages 200 rides per week.

According to Bradley Byrne, president of the Chamber, the purpose of this new transportation system is to help local workers.

“The goal here is to get people to jobs,” said Byrne. “We found out that the number one reason why able-bodied adults in Alabama are not working is that they don’t have means of transportation to and from work.”

With a service zone spanning 17 miles around the east side of Mobile, MoGo offers free rides to places like Austal, Greer’s Market, Airbus and more.

“The route is designed right now to reach mainly people on the eastern part of Mobile because that is where the highest unemployment is,” Byrne said.

For other destinations, MoGo charges $1.25 per ride.

There are currently three vehicles running from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. all throughout the week.

“We know the people that use it value it so it’s doing what we want it to do,” he said. “We are just trying to get more people to use it.”

Some locals said this is what the city needs.

“I think it’s great,” said one Mobilian. “Anything that helps people live and survive.”
