The 3-year-old son of Freddie Freeman had been hospitalized for more than a week while the Dodgers’ first baseman — along with his teammates, fans, friends, and family — waited patiently for updates.

The news all had been hoping for finally arrived: Maximus Freeman was going home.

“After 8 long days in the Pediatric ICU, we are officially HOME!” Freddie Freeman’s wife, Chelsea, wrote on her Instagram account Sunday. “Max still has a long road ahead of him to regain his strength and relearn how to walk. But we are so thankful to have our family back together. Thank you God for this miracle. Also, thank you to our incredible team of doctors and angel nurses for taking such good care of our boy. And to our village for helping so much with Charlie and Brandon.

Freddie Freeman hasn’t played for the Dodgers since he was placed on the family emergency list on July 26; rookie Hunter Feduccia was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City that day to replace Freeman on the Dodgers’ active roster.

According to the original post from Chelsea Freeman, Maximus was diagnosed with transient synovitis after he contracted a viral infection during the All-Star break. Freddie Freeman was chosen as a reserve for the National League team for the All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas on July 15.

The follow-up post describing the events of July 26, the day Freeman left Houston, was alarming.

“Last Friday, Max rapidly declined and went into full body paralysis,” Chelsea Freeman wrote on Instagram. “We are very fortunate to have gotten him to the hospital in time so they could reinforce his lungs. Freddie was in Houston at the time and rushed to the first flight back home. After many tests, Max is battling a severe case of Guillain-Barré syndrome. A rare neurological condition that is especially rare in children.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, causing weakness, numbness, or paralysis. The website notes that Guillain-Barre syndrome can affect all age groups, but the risk increases as you age.

The latest update from Chelsea Freeman included a video of Max meeting his brothers, smiling, in the hospital before being discharged.

The Dodgers had been averaging 3.8 runs per game without Freeman — more than a full run lower than their average runs per game (4.9) for the 2024 season — prior to beating the Oakland A’s 10-0 on Saturday.

Before Saturday’s game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated Freeman might return to the team during the team’s home series against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning Monday.

The reason behind Freeman’s imminent return is as good as anyone could have hoped for.
