Breaking up is never easy, especially when bonds have been formed over decades.

The Loi family has been running Leong Yeow Chicken Rice since 1974, but May 27 will mark the end of the business after 50 years.

Not only will the family be saying goodbye to their store, but they will also be saying goodbye to their customers.

A regular customer named Matthew Abraham Soh shared the news on Facebook group “Can Eat! SG” on Thursday (May 23), saying it was “very hard” to say goodbye.

Leong Yeow Chicken Rice also recently put up signs at one of its two outlets announcing its closure.

It was written in Chinese: “Our journey has come to an end, but the beautiful memories we have created together will remain in our hearts forever.”

While the Facebook post stated that the closure only concerned the Waterloo Street outlet, a Leong Yeow Chicken Rice spokesperson, who only wanted to be identified as Loy, confirmed to AsiaOne that both the Waterloo Street and Queen Street outlets would be closing on May 27.

A spokesperson declined to provide any information about the reasons for the closure.

In the comments section of the Facebook post, many netizens expressed dismay at the news, with some trying to understand what had happened to the company.

“It’s sad to see it go. [just] “Went there last week. Had the best chicken rice stall ever,” said one Facebook user.

Another netizen admitted he was “really shocked” given that he’d been eating at the chicken rice joint for the past 30 years.

One Facebook user speculated that operating costs may have played a role in the closure, commenting: “So disgusting that businesses are being killed off because of rising rents.”

AsiaOne spoke to a spokesperson who said that at present, there are no concrete plans for Leong Yeow Chicken Rice to reopen at another location in the near future.
