Every day counts in personal liberty cases, Supreme Court says

The Supreme Court stated on Friday, May 17, 2024: the issue of personal freedomespecially if: money laundering lawevery day is important and there is no room for delay.

“In matters of personal freedom of the people, every day counts,” Justice BR Gabai said while leading a bench that also comprised Justice Sandeep Mehta.

The remarks came in a petition filed by businessman Amardeep Dar, who is represented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal.Dal is the defendant in the case Delhi Liquor Policy Litigation.

He is accused of colluding with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and abetting kickbacks.

Mr Sibal said Mr Dar’s bail plea was postponed more than 40 times in the Delhi High Court before it was listed in July.

He asked the court to request the High Court to decide on the bail application, allowing Mr Dar to appeal the Supreme Court decision during the summer break if necessary.

Justice Gavai pointed out that Mr Dar’s regular bail application was filed in the High Court 11 months ago.

The judge said the continued shutdown had robbed the people of any hope for freedom. The Supreme Court asked the High Court to decide the bail petition promptly.
