The proposed “bridge of friendship” aims to strengthen ties between Bahrain and Qatar, which have a historically checkered past. The initiative is expected to boost economic growth within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and foster closer cultural ties between countries.
As reported in the news, the Bahrain-Qatar Causeway project, as it is now officially called, will significantly reduce travel time over the 34-mile distance from five hours to just 30 minutes. Initially, in 2008 he was predicted to cost £1.8 billion, but the project’s budget has since increased to nearly £2.4 billion.
The bridge is designed to accommodate both road and rail traffic and extends from the existing King Fahd Causeway, which connects Khobar, Saudi Arabia, to Al Jasra, Bahrain. It will stand 40 meters high, allowing passage for maritime navigation.
Dr. Omar Albaydri from the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) highlighted the economic and cultural ties between Bahrain and Qatar. He noted that the two countries’ proximity and vibrant economies position them as natural trading partners.
