  • President Donald Trump was escorted offstage after loud pops rang out during his rally.
  • Video of the incident shows Trump with blood on his face, clutching his ear, in front of a screaming crowd.
  • The former president is safe according to the Secret Service.

Secret Service agents escorted former President Donald Trump off the stage of his Saturday campaign rally after loud pops that sounded like gunshots rang out from the crowd.

Video of the rally, held in Butler, Pennsylvania, shows Trump ducking and appearing to move his hand near his face. Agents can be seen running to cover him.

Images online also show the former President with blood on his face. He can be seen defiantly raising his fist before being whisked off stage by Secret Service agents.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” a Trump spokesman said following the incident. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”

NBC News correspondent Darren Botelho reported security at the event could be heard saying, “The shooter is down,” following the incident.

A spokesperson for the Secret Service directed Business Insider to a statement posted on X, which confirmed “an incident” at the rally but did not specify whether it was a gun that had been fired.

“The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe,” the statement read. “This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available.”

Dave McCormick, the Republican nominee for Senate in Pennsylvania, had been seated in the front row of the rally and told Politico it appeared a member of the crowd behind him had been shot.

“All the sudden shots started to crack, someone behind me appears to have been shot,” McCormick told Politico. “There’s lots of blood, and then the Secret Service were all over President Trump.”

Representatives for the Butler Township Police Department and District Attorney’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

A pool report indicates President Joe Biden has received an initial briefing on the incident at former President Trump’s rally, though the White House did not respond to a request for comment from BI.

Politicians from across the aisle were quick to condemn political violence and wish Trump a speedy recovery.

“Laura and I are grateful that President Trump is safe following the cowardly attack on his life,” former President George W. Bush said in a statement. “And we commend the men and women of the Secret Service for their speedy response.”
