Scammers Pose As Sheriff’s Deputies, Demand Money

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn its citizens that if you receive a phone call in which someone claims to be a Detective/Deputy with our agency and asks for money, it is a scam.

CCSO has been alerted to fraudulent calls, employing tactics such as “spoofing,” or scam calls where the caller falsely identifies themselves as a law enforcement officer from our Agency.

The scammers aim to obtain personal information and will use scenarios such as missed jury duty leading to imminent arrest warrants, requests to resolve legal matters through callbacks, or claims of being expert witnesses in official cases.

It is imperative to recognize and avoid scams that deceitfully imitate communications from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. Such communications may prompt you to transfer money, purchase gift cards or Bitcoin, or divulge sensitive personal or business data.

Be assured that our Sheriff’s Office never initiates unsolicited phone calls or emails demanding money or personal information, nor do we threaten arrest.

If you’re ever unsure about the legitimacy of a call from someone claiming to be law enforcement, hang up and then call your local law enforcement agency immediately.

Please share this information with friends, family, and neighbors – especially our senior citizens who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams.

For more information, the FBI maintains a list of common scams and provides safety tips. Go to www.FBI.gov for a comprehensive list of types of scams.
