Gemini Side Panel expands to more Gmail and Drive users in Labs

As Announced at Google I/O 2024Gemini is now widely available to users of Gmail, Google Drive, and other Workspace products.

Google has been working on integrating Gemini AI into various of its products over the past year. This includes Android, Search, etc. Workspace products like Gmail and Drive have several AI services, such as “Help me write.”But the new side panel is probably the most useful addition yet.

the current, gemini 1.5 proA new side panel in the Workspace app allows users to leverage AI to look at files and emails and provide summaries, aggregations, and answers using data in their account. This leverages the expanded context window in Gemini 1.5 Pro, which allows for up to 1 million tokens. A token is a measurement of the amount of data available for AI to analyze and use at a given point in time.

Last week, Google announced a side panel that lets you summarize long emails, ask questions that AI answers using emails you’ve sent and received, and use information and data from documents and PDFs in Drive to write emails. We emphasized the convenient benefits such as:

One particularly compelling example shows how they use Gemini’s side panel to summarize key points from emails they’ve received from schools over several weeks, and to extract key takeaways from meetings recorded on Google Meet.

Google previously announced that the side panel would be available as early as May 14th for users enrolled in Labs, but it now appears to be widely available. Google began rolling out these features in the Duet AI side panel in February.But this broader rollout will see the introduction of Gemini branding along with UI tweaks.

Starting today, Gemini’s new side panel is available in Gmail, Drive, Docs, and other workspace products. however, Register with Workspace LabsIf you’re already registered, you may see Gemini in your side panel. Once the feature is enabled for your account, you’ll see a large pop-up from Google, as shown below.

Google plans to introduce a side panel in June for adding paid Google One AI Premium subscribers and paid Gemini for Workspace customers. Gemini for Workspace alpha users will be able to program You should be able to see it starting this week.
