Wreath-laying ceremony held in honor of Merchant Marines at Riverfront Park

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – During World War II, more than 9,000 Merchant Mariners lost their lives in service. A ceremony was held on Wednesday, May 22, to honor civilian mariners who assisted military operations during war and peacetime.

The Wilmington Propeller Club held a wreath-laying ceremony for the Merchant Marines that took place at the Veterans Memorial in Riverfront Park.

“The Propeller Club of the port of Wilmington is an industry group. Some people have referred to us as the Rotary of the Sea. It’s all kinds of groups folks who help unload the ships, folks who help repairs, ships, and folks like me. I am a Maritime lawyer so if there’s an accident or something to do with a ship, sometimes I get caught on,” Geoffrey Losse, President Meritus of the Propeller Club, said.
