Ambulance trial: Attorney General denies allegations of trying to implicate Ato Forson

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has strongly denied allegations that he attempted to implicate Minority Leader and former Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato-Forson, in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial.

Mr Richard Jakpa, who appeared in court on Thursday, May 23, as the third defendant, alleged that the Attorney General approached him at irregular hours to implicate the Minority Leader.

National Spokesperson for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, accused Dame of plotting to have Ato Forson jailed.

However, in a statement, the Attorney General urged the public to ignore the allegations.

“For the record, the Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Justice categorically deny the NDC’s allegations and insinuations.”

“The public is urged to disregard the allegations. The Attorney General remains focused on the vigorous prosecution of this case.”

“Throughout the trial, the Republic has relied solely on the records of the accused transaction, namely the purchase of an ordinary van disguised as an ambulance, to sustain its case against the accused. This record existed before January 2022 (when the proceedings commenced) and was duly submitted to the court by the prosecution prior to the commencement of the trial.

“The Republic has never requested or desired the cooperation of any of the defendants in this case. Evidence of guilt has already been established against all of the defendants in this case. Neither the Attorney General nor any staff member of the Attorney General’s Office has ever contacted any of the defendants with the intent to obtain evidence from them.”

“Rather, it is the third defendant who proposed to the Republic through the Attorney General to enter into a plea bargain or plea negotiation in various letters dated April 27, 2023, May 16, 2023, May 30, 2023 and June 12, 2023. This plea bargain proposal has not been accepted by the Attorney General to date.

“Although the plea bargaining law passed by Congress allows prosecutors to negotiate with the defendant after a plea bargain offer has been made, the attorney general has not asked the third defendant to give false testimony in this case.”

“The Attorney General has been under immense pressure from all quarters to drop the charges against the first defendant, Cassiel Ato Forson, but has not succumbed. The Attorney General has video evidence of the first defendant, Cassiel Ato Forson, coming to him and pleading with him to drop the charges. The Attorney General refused.”

“The Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Justice believe that the latest allegations against the Attorney General are part of a grander plan by the National Development Commission to put further pressure on the Attorney General in order to divert attention from the real issues regarding the actions of the accused which have caused enormous economic losses to the country.”
