Argument over money leads to man shooting sibling in Hermitage, TN

HERMITAGE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man accused of shooting his own sibling during an argument over money is now sitting behind bars facing felony charges, police said.

According to court documents, the incident took place at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 28 at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Old Hickory Boulevard.

Officials said the siblings were in the complex’s parking lot arguing over money when 20-year-old James Johnson pulled out a Glock pistol with an extended magazine and fired two shots toward his sibling.

The victim was struck once in each leg by the gunfire, police said. After the shooting, Johnson reportedly ran to his mother’s home and hid two pistols under her couch.

An arrest report states Johnson then called 911, stating that there had been a drive-by shooting in the area.

Police said when they arrived on scene they found the victim yelling at Johnson saying “Just finish me off.” During an interview, the mother of the siblings allegedly told officers that Johnson shot his sibling and stashed weapons under her couch.

Under the couch, officers reported they found multiple extended magazines and two pistols. After getting consent to search the home, police seized a Glock 9mm handgun and a .22 pistol.

Johnson allegedly told officers that the Glock 9mm belonged to him and the other belonged to his sister.

The Glock 9mm matched the shell casings that were found outside near where the victim was shot, authorities said.

According to police, Ring camera footage of the incident showed the siblings arguing loudly and Johnson holding a black handgun with an extended magazine in his right hand.

Johnson was taken into custody and charged with attempted criminal homicide, possession of a firearm with intent, possession of fentanyl, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He remains jailed on a $416,000 bond.
