Vancouver police arrest child abuser

Digital Products The investigation revealed probable cause to arrest Daniel Gray on two counts of first-degree child sexual abuse and two counts of first-degree child rape.

Detectives from the Vancouver Police Digital Evidence Cybercrimes Unit began investigating Daniel B. Gray in May 2022. The investigation was based on a series of reports by Gray’s family and friends who allege that Gray sexually abused girls in his care over decades and took photographs of his victims.

Detectives believed the report was credible, but the statute of limitations for criminally charging Gray had already expired. But the detail and breadth of the statements suggested a pattern of sexually predatory behavior that went much deeper than was limited by the narrow timeline of abuse initially reported. Investigators began seeking additional information and evidence from Gray’s family and associates, many of whom were understandably hesitant to speak to police.

Through a series of interviews spanning nearly a year, DECU detectives identified several much younger girls with whom Gray had been in contact, one of whom detailed a series of rapes and sexual assaults during that time in a forensic interview. The subsequent investigation determined there was probable cause to arrest Gray on two counts of first-degree child sexual abuse and two counts of first-degree child rape.

Due to Gray being a homeless person, law enforcement was initially unable to locate him and an arrest warrant was issued. In April 2024, investigators from the U.S. Marshals Service’s Violent Offenders Task Force and DECU located and arrested Daniel Gray in Portland. Detectives located an address where Gray was staying. An arrest warrant was executed at the location the following day. Detectives found dozens of digital devices, multiple cameras (which Gray had used as a “child model” photographer), and a large amount of amateur sexual images (also depicting children). Based on an initial examination of his digital devices, detectives quickly developed substantial grounds to file additional child sexual abuse charges against Gray. On May 22, 2024, Gray was arrested on the newly discovered charges. Gray’s digital devices are still undergoing forensic examination.

The final charges Gray is awaiting trial on are:

  • 2x the crime of first-degree child rape
  • 2x felony first-degree child sexual abuse
  • Featuring depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
  • three counts, possession of depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct in the first degree;
  • and possession of a depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct in the second degree.
