Fact check: The news checker team noticed the Hindustan Times logo dated September 17, 2018, in the top left corner of the video.
A keyword search by Newschecker on YouTube led to a Hindustan Times report dated September 18, 2018. The headline was “Congress played key role in India’s independence struggle, says Mohan Bhagwat”.
“RSS is holding a three-day lecture in the national capital with its supreme leader Mohan Bhagwat. During the lecture, Bhagwat said that the Indian National Congress played a major role in the independence movement and has produced many great minds. The RSS supreme leader said, ‘Political awareness among people is low. Political awareness is extremely important. The Indian National Congress has led some of the greatest movements in history and has produced many notable people. The Indian National Congress played a vital role in India’s struggle for independence,” the video’s description reads.
The research team also came across numerous news reports from September 2018 and confirmed that Bhagwat’s praise of the Indian National Congress was not during the ongoing Indian Lok Sabha elections.
