Fresh from his historic hat-trick in the Europa League final, Ademola Lookman has been selected for new coach Finidi George’s national team and will be hoping to make a similar impact for Nigeria in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.

The team is a strong one featuring Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface of German champions Bayer Leverkusen, but Boniface and his team suffered a brutal defeat to Atalanta striker Lookman in the Europa League final last Wednesday.

Lookman became the first player to score a hat-trick in a Europa League final and the first player to do so in a European final since 1975, giving Atalanta their first continental trophy.

Nigeria will face South Africa in Uyo on June 7 before taking on Benin in Abidjan three days later.

George maintains faith in the majority of the players who lost to hosts Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations final in February.

The squad has been further strengthened by the return of Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and Boniface, both of whom missed the Africa Cup of Nations through injury.

The home side have just two players in their squad – Remo Stars defender Sadik Ismael and goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo.
