The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (Icasa) Complaints and Compliance Commission (CCC) has found that the SABC acted discriminatory against the DA by reflecting its views on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s “burning flag” ad in its decision not to air the controversial ad.

The CCC, chaired by Justice Thokozile Masipa, recommended that Icasa be directed to stop the SABC from refusing to air the DA’s adverts, allow the DA’s adverts to be aired and also pay a fine of R500,000 for the breach.

The DA sparked controversy earlier this month with an advertisement showing a burning flag meant to show that “life will only get worse” if the ANC, EFF and Zuma “faction” form a coalition after the May 29 election.
