Google News Biden to use rest of term putting Ukraine in ‘best position’

US President Joe Biden will use his remaining months in office to strengthen Ukraine, a senior aide said on Sept 14, as Kyiv fights off Russia’s invasion for a third year.

Mr Biden withdrew from the US elections, which are potentially perilous for Ukraine as they could see Ukraine-sceptic Donald Trump back in the White House.

The prospect has raised fears in Kyiv, which relies mainly on the US for support and is preparing for Mr Biden’s handover in January.

Mr Biden is “determined to use the four months to put Ukraine in the best possible position to prevail,” White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said.

Google News At least two killed, 29 injured in Egypt train collision

At least two were killed and 29 others wounded when two passenger trains‮ ‬collided in Zagazig city, Sharkia Governorate, north-east Cairo, Egypt’s ministry of health reported on Sept 14.

The injured were taken to hospitals and “rescue operations are ongoing”, the ministry said.

The railway authority said in a statement that one of the trains was heading from Zagazig city to Ismailia city, while the other was on its way from Mansoura city to Zagazig city.

Google News UN official says staff fear they are ‘a target’ for Israel

A senior UN official said on Sept 14 that teachers and other UN staff working in Gaza fear they are now targets after an Israeli air strike hit a school-turned-shelter in the territory this week.

A Sept 11 strike on the UN-run Al-Jawni School in central Gaza, which is housing displaced Palestinians, killed 18 people. including six employees of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

It was the deadliest single incident for the agency in more than 11 months of war and drew international condemnation.

Google News Climate protesters block Dutch highway as police strike

Climate activists blocked a major traffic artery in the Netherlands on Sept 14, the latest in a series of demonstrations against government subsidies on fossil fuels.

With policing of the protest light due to a strike, around 500 activists marched onto a highway that leads into the centre of The Hague, seat of the Dutch government, around midday.

Accompanied by drums, protesters chanted “the oceans are rising and so are we” and carried banners saying “Action Now” and “Stop Fossil Subsidies”. Some of the protesters brought camping chairs and set up tents on the spot to indicate they were planning to stay overnight.

Google News France bids final farewell to Olympics with parade

France bid a final and reluctant farewell to the Paris Olympics on Sept 14 with a parade on the Champs-Elysees followed by a concert featuring artists from the opening and closing ceremonies.

The final event of an acclaimed summer of sport saw tens of thousands of fans gather on the French capital’s most famous avenue to applaud and cheer the nation’s new sporting heroes.

Around 70,000 people gathered for the parade featuring athletes, volunteers and public sector workers, which was followed by a multi-artist concert on a spectacular stage around the Arc de Triomphe.
