Golfer Grayson Murray dies by suicide, family confirms

The family of professional golfer Grayson Murray have confirmed that he committed suicide, following news of his death that shocked the sports world over the weekend.

Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, Died on SaturdayHe was 30, the day after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.

His parents, Eric and Terry Murray, ssupport Sunday’s statement “Life hasn’t always been easy for Grayson and although he took his own life, we know he is now resting in peace.”

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” they wrote. “It doesn’t feel real that we have to admit it not only to ourselves but to the world. It’s a nightmare.”

Murray became a full member of the PGA Tour in 2017 and won the Barbasol Championship that year at age 23.

Last year, he won two tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour, at the AdventHealth Championship in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Simmons Bank Open outside Nashville, Tennessee.

Murray won the Sony Open in Hawaii this year, hitting a wedge shot to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to force a playoff and then finishing with a 40-foot putt to win.

Murray has been open about his struggles with alcoholism and mental illness. In a press conference after winning the Sony Open in January, he said: he He told reporters He said he had been drinking during tournament week and that alcohol was his “outlet.”

“That was over seven years ago. I’m a different person now,” he says, “and if I hadn’t quit drinking eight months ago, I wouldn’t be in this position now.”

Murray also revealed he had suffered from anxiety and depression, “which was heavily linked to alcohol use”, as well as self-esteem issues, but he said his life changed when he decided to “stop trying to fight it alone” and seek help.

“There were days when I didn’t want to get out of bed. I thought I was a failure. I always thought I was a failure. I thought I had so much talent and I was just wasting it,” he said. “It was a terrible situation, but like I said, you have to be courageous. You have to be willing to keep going. And to my surprise, I did.”

In a statement, his parents wrote: “We have so many unanswered questions, but one: Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. He was loved by us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, his friends, his fellow players, and apparently many of you reading this. He was loved, and he will be missed.”

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan ssupportstatement He said Saturday he was “devastated” to learn of Murray’s death that morning.

“The PGA Tour is like a family and when you lose a member of your family, it’s never the same,” he said. “We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Grief counselors will be available at PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events this week, according to a news release.
