Mayor Michelle Wu announced the 30 winners of the Legacy Business Awards Wednesday, highlighting small businesses across Boston’s neighborhoods that have served their communities for over 10 years.
The honored businesses represent 19 of Boston’s 23 neighborhoods and have collectively been in business for 1,281 years, according to a statement from the City of Boston.
“Our legacy businesses are anchors in our communities. They connect residents with resources, and expand access to opportunity for families across Boston,” Wu said in a statement.
Legacy businesses are defined by the City as those that are “long-standing, independent enterprises that make a strong contribution to community character.”
The goal of the Legacy Business Program, now in its second year, is to “enrich the cultural vibrancy of the City if Boston” while providing residents employment opportunities and giving small businesses the chance to increase their influence.
Over 1,500 nominations made their way to the Mayor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, the statement reads, with 276 businesses being represented. Businesses had to meet certain criteria: being located in Boston and in operation for at least a decade. A committee of people from Boston Main Streets and other City departments reviewed and selected awardees.
The 30 winning businesses, will be honored at a June 4 public awards ceremony and reception.
“This program is designed to provide continued support and services to the winners, and other small businesses throughout the city,” said Aliesha Porcena, Director of Small Business for the City of Boston, in the statement. “I look forward to working with local partners to ensure these businesses continue to thrive.”
