Update: Google says “the issue has now been resolved.”
Google has acknowledged an issue with Search that returned blank pages and error messages when users asked queries. The company said it has identified the issue and is working on a fix. Users have reported issues while accessing Google Search, Google Maps, YouTube, Google News, Gmail and more.
“There’s an ongoing issue with serving some features in Google Search. We’ve identified the issue and we’re working on a fix,” Google said in a post on X, and also provided a link to the dashboard which shows “Service disruption” in Search.
“Features included some results on Google News, Discover and other products, for those who have asked about specific ones,” it added in a separate tweet.
“There’s an ongoing issue with serving some features in Google Search. We’ve identified the issue and we’re working on a fix. Next update will be within 12 hours,” the company said on the page, indicating that services were hit at 06:47 PDT (7.17 pm IST), on May 31. However, the reports of disruptions started coming around an hour before.
Which Google services are down globally
Google’s official Services Status dashboard suggests problems with Google Search and that the rest of the services are running fine.
However, DownDetector – the crowd-sourced outage detection platform – suggests disruption in Search as well as Gmail. Users on X reported issues with accessing Maps, News and other Google services. Reports peaked at around 7 pm IST with 1,115 reports of disruption. At the time of writing, the platform shows over 170 reports on disruption.
Around 69% people reported facing issues with the Google Website, 29% reported issues with the Search and the remaining 2% reported login issues.
Members of the TOI Tech also tried accessing Google Search, Maps, News, and other services and have been facing issues with News and Search.
Users also took X (formerly Twitter) to report about the outage. A user named, Dr Iain Overton
@iainoverton posted, “Either google news is down, or defence cuts really are a thing”.
“never thought I’d say this but is GOOGLE down for anyone else?? it’s making it impossible or for me to search for news”, wrote another user on X.
