This year’s annual Google I/O event will focus on Artificial Intelligence and its integration into mobile devices

Google I/O, Google’s annual developer conference, will kick off on May 14 with a keynote at 1 PM ET (10 AM PT). This event, which will focus on artificial intelligence (AI), will be streamed on Google’s website and YouTube channel, with sign language interpretation available.

A total focus on Artificial Intelligence and its impact on the mobile experience

During the conference, Google will emphasize the importance of AI in its ecosystem, highlighting its Gemini model, designed to compete with other advanced AI systems such as ChatGPT. This model is at the center of new features for Google Maps, Android and Google’s own search engine.

The event is expected to cover how the company merges AI with search, implementing features such as English conversation practice with artificial intelligence or the generation of images for virtual purchases and trials. Users can also expect more generative tools for Google Maps, such as detecting electric vehicle charging stations and managing restaurant reservations. A feature in testing uses AI to call and wait until a representative is available to assist the user.

How the Pixel becomes an AI-powered smart device

The event could feature a more personal version of the digital assistant, called “Pixie,” powered by Gemini. Pixie will include multimodal functions such as taking photos to learn how to use objects or identify places to buy them.

This could pose a challenge to other devices like the Rabbit R1 or the Human AI Pin, which are trying to justify their existence by competing in the smart device space.

Will we see new devices at this year’s Google I/O?

Although hardware does not seem to be the main focus of the event, we could see previews of the Pixel 9 or the next Pixel Fold, whose rumors are already in circulation. Additionally, the Pixel 8A and the renewed Pixel Tablet are now available for purchase. These developments along with improvements in AI are expected to make Google I/O 2024 a key event in technological innovation.
