The Senate on Tuesday, May 28, revoked the three-month suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ningi was suspended on March 12 after he claimed in an interview with the BBC Hausa service that National Assembly had passed two appropriation bills for 2024, increasing the 2024 budget by 3.7 trillion naira.

In response to Ningi’s suspension, his legal counsel, Femi Falana SAN, wrote to the Senate President giving him a seven-day ultimatum to remove him or face legal action. Senator Akpabio made it clear that the decision to suspend Ningi was not his sole decision but a collective one of the Senate.

The lifting of the suspension followed the consideration and adoption of a motion titled, “Motion for the unconditional removal of Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi” moved by the Minority Leader, Abba Moro (PDP – Benue South).

“Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi has been suspended for three months for breach of legislative rules, misconduct and unethical conduct in his interview with the BBC Hausa Service on the 2024 Budget Bill,” Moro said during the lead debate.

Moro, on behalf of the Senate Minority Leadership, took responsibility and apologised to the Senate, calling for reconsideration of Ningi’s removal as the senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

Senators approved the motion by oral vote during plenary sitting under the chairmanship of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
