The good news is that the city’s supervised beaches opened for business this weekend.

The bad news is that the city has warned that the Britannia Beach is not recommended for swimming due to high bacterial levels.

But the best news is that Westboro Beach and both Petrie Island beaches are good to go.

Ottawa Public Health collects water samples daily from the beaches tp test for the presence of E. coli bacteria. When elevated levels of E. coli are detected in the water, it is more likely that other disease-causing organisms are also present. These organisms can result in skin, ear, throat or gastro-intestinal illnesses.

These levels can change dramatically from day to day, so there’s still hope Britannia and the other beaches will be available by midweek.

The capital is expecting a heat wave starting Monday with highs in the range of 30-35 C. Those temperatures could feel like 40 eith the humidex factored in.
