Calumet City Historical Society to host antiques dealer, Cal City Jeopardy!

The Calumet City Historical Society will host an antiques dealer Sunday and a trivia contest next month.

Rex Newell will give a talk titled “Trash or Treasure” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Calumet City Historical Society Center at 760 Wentworth Ave.

Newell, of Rex’s Antiques, will discuss antiques, art and coin after the 2 p.m. membership meeting.

“Afterward, he will go around the room and do an appraisal on one item for each person at no charge,” the Calumet City Historical Society said in a press release. “Rex specializes in antiques, mid-century modern, antique furniture, old toys, board games, real and costume jewelry, watches, American coins, designer furniture, and paper currency, including national notes, gold notes, confederate notes, silver notes, star notes, and U.S. postage currency. He appraises war relics such as original military antiques, cloth army insignias, field gear, groups, metal emblems and uniforms. He also specializes in artwork, including sculptures, fine art, paintings, rare sets, statues, framed art and prints from the mid-20th century. You can participate and receive a complimentary appraisal; there is a one-item limit per person.”

The Calumet City Historical Society will present Cal City Jeopardy! at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11 after its 2 p.m. monthly meeting.

“This new trivia game will feature several categories relating to Calumet City, people, places, churches, institutions, government, history, schools, dates, etc. Two games will be played, each with a set of three contestants,” the Calumet City Historical Society said in a press release. “Each game will be one regular round and the final round. The winners will receive cash and prizes from the pot. The participants will be drawn from a special participation raffle held that day. Each participation raffle ticket is $5, and you must purchase your ticket before 3 p.m. to enter. This event should be a fun afternoon for the contestants and the audience watching.”

Both events are free and open to the public.

The Calumet City Historical Society is open from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, 1-4 p.m. Thursday and 1-5 p.m. on the second Sunday.
