With the end of the Pre-Olympic tournament we already know the name of the 12 teams that will compete in the basketball championship at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. For months we have known that there were eight with a guaranteed ticket, but many others – including Spain – have had to tighten the teeth to meet in the French capital.

Sergio Scariolo’s boys have achieved it. By winning all four of their matches, including the final against the Bahamas, they have certified what will be their seventh consecutive trip to the Games – sixth for Rudy Fernández. The achievement is immense, since it once again places them among the 12 best teams in the world despite the fact that legendary players like Pau Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro or José Calderón are no longer there.

If Spain has managed to get in at the last minute, the same has happened with Brazil, which defeated Latvia in the final of its group, as well as with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece and Puerto Rico, a team that gave the surprise by beating Lithuania. Therefore, this is the final list for said tournament.

Paris 2024 men’s basketball tournament groups

As expected, with only 12 places for the Olympic Games, the level of the three groups is very high. Most teams have players in the NBA

Puerto Rico has perhaps been the big surprise of the pre-Olympic finals. With Jose Alvarado as leader, the team led by Nelson Colón beat Lithuania in the final (79-68) to return to an Olympic event 20 years later. Along the way they also left another great team like Italy. Already in Paris they will face each other with Serbia, the United States and South Sudan.

It will be on July 27 when the basketball championship begins with the start of the group stage matches, which will last until August 3. Once the three groups have concluded, the quarterfinals will take place on August 6, the semifinals on the 8th of the same month and both the final and the fight for the bronze medal on the 10th.

Paris 2024 men’s basketball tournament format

The basketball tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games repeats the format of previous editions. Thus, 12 teams are divided into three groups of four so that each team faces all the rivals in its group until completing three games. Once that phase is over, the two best in each group, as well as the two best third parties, advance to the quarterfinals. From there everything is decided in a single match until determining which team wins the gold medal.
