The roundup continues

  • Devil’s Purge is an AR game mixing Pokémon Go and Doom
  • We’ve had our eyes on it for a while, and the devs announced key new features at Gamescom
  • It includes featured indie metal bands producing some of the soundtrack, and new geolocation features

Yes, with Gamescom finished there’s still news trickling out that’s been lost in the hailstorm of major announcements. Today’s subject, Devil’s Purge, is one game I’ve had my eye on for a while. It pits you against demonic entities in a mix of Pokémon Go and Doom, as the developers describe it.

At Gamescom, the developers revealed that they had drafted two indie metal bands onto the soundtrack. Men Eater and ZERO MASSIVE are the first two bands to be announced, but developer Ontop Games promises that more will also join.

Meanwhile, new geolocation and time-based features have also been revealed. For an AR game like this, real-world influence on in-game events is pretty crucial, and you can expect to encounter different demons depending on the time or place that you can then leave for later or exorcise on the spot.

Mortis

While I’ve heard the old refrain of wanting to make a game that isn’t just a gacha or match-3 before, I have to admit Ontop are one of the developers putting their money where their mouth is. An AR game is ambitious at the best of times, especially given the amount of complexity tech has, even nowadays. But at the same time, I can’t help but want this kind of game to succeed, if only to fill the heavy metal-gaming niche that Metal: Hellsinger carved out for me.

But in the meantime, while you marvel at this new game, don’t forget to check out some of the great games that have just released. Why not start off by working through the latest entries in our list of the top five new mobile games to try this week?
