DOWNTOWN Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) president Gregory Aboud has confirmed that the majority of stores in Port of Spain were closed on July 1.

Aboud spoke to Newsday on the morning of July 1 in the wake of Hurricane Beryl.

He said while most of Port of Spain was closed for the hurricane there were no reports of damage or reports of flooding in any stores.

“We have a lot to be grateful for with respect to how this storm has passed,” Aboud said.

“It seems that we have been spared.”

Stores along Frederick Street, Prince Street, and other areas in and around the nation’s capital shuttered in anticipation of the storm.

Aboud said he didn’t believe remaining open late, for those who were still open, would be a wise move.

“There is hardly anyone in the city, and transportation was quite difficult this morning. I don’t expect that there is going to be much of a reason to be open today.”
