Elementary school students raise money for Habitat for Humanity | Top Stories

North Country Habitat for Humanity, which held an open house Saturday at its current build site on Pershing Avenue, the group’s 17th such project, partners with volunteers to provide low cost homes to community members.

“We have volunteers, no one is paid and we build affordable housing for families,” Peter Scott, president of North Country Habitat for Humanity, said, “We are just finishing our project.”

Scott thanked the students for their donations Monday, at the elementary school.

“This is going to be incredible, what a great job you have done raising money to help us out,” Scott said, “Thank you very much.”

According to Kysle Denny, a parent facilitator at Malone Central, Davis Elementary wanted to start a coin corral last year and parent facilitators wanted to do fundraising this year too.

“We ended up wanting to do it every year because it’s a community project for the kids,” Denny said.

Denny said Malone’s elementary schools and the middle school picked different initiatives to donate towards this year.

“Flanders picked Habitat for Humanity, St. Joseph’s picked Focus on Ferals, Davis raised money in-house for some stuff outside for the kids,” she said, “They have an outdoor courtyard and they were going to put picnic tables out there and they wanted to do umbrellas so the kids aren’t directly out in the sun.”

Denny said there were incentives for the students as they worked towards their fundraising goal, including popsicles and this week they will enjoy an extra recess after meeting their goal.

“It’s fun though and the kids love to watch the poster go up,” she said, “It’s hard to get it started sometimes, but not once you get going.”

Flanders students raised a total of $212.70 to benefit the North Country Habitat for Humanity.
