EU industry chief Breton urges U.S. to impose new tech regulations and promote digital market sharing

PARIS: European Union industry representatives have urged the United States to pass new technology regulations in the hope of fostering a unified transatlantic digital market.

The EU is widely considered to be the leading authority on tech regulation, having passed comprehensive legislation, including the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, which scrutinises the practices of major companies like Google and Meta.

The United States has relied heavily on existing laws to regulate the business practices of tech giants.

For example, in March the Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit against iPhone maker Apple Inc., alleging that the company violated existing antitrust laws. Apple denies the allegations and has asked a judge to dismiss the case.

“We need the same digital regulation. It would be great if we had a global digital market. Not just the EU, not just the US, but the EU and the US,” said Thierry Breton.

Amid growing public outcry over the potential risks of rapidly advancing AI systems, U.S. President Joe Biden issued a series of AI-focused executive orders last year, requiring developers to test their systems for safety and introducing guidelines to help root out deepfake images.

“It’s crucial that we align ourselves now,” Breton added. “The United States and Europe share the same values, and that’s a great thing.”

Breton was speaking at the annual Viva Technology conference in Paris, which this year featured executives from major tech companies and politicians, including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and former US climate change envoy John Kerry.
