EU Operation Aspides protects a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden

The Greek frigate Hs Psara of the European military operation Eunavfor Aspides has “successfully” conducted a close protection operation for a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden. This is learned from a post published today on Eunavfor Aspides’ X account, which underlines that “providing maritime security to merchant ships in the region is one of the main tasks” of the operation.

Since mid-November, the pro-Iranian Yemeni Houthi group has launched a series of attacks against commercial and military ships transiting the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden, claiming to only target vessels headed for or connected to in some way to Israel, in the context of supporting the Palestinian population.

Continued Houthi attacks prompted the EU to launch Operation Aspides, whose one-year mandate is active from 19 February 2024. The operation, which falls under the EU’s common security and defense policy, protects targeted ships from attacks at sea or in the air, without conducting attacks on land.

Aspides operates in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2722, which calls for the cessation of Houthi attacks against commercial shipping, and recognizes the right to defend ships from such attacks, in line with international law.
