Firework tent raises money for local prison ministry

FAIRMONT, W.Va (WDTV) – Kairos Prison Ministry set up a firework tent with TNT Fireworks in Fairmont.

It’s on the corner of Benoni Avenue and Seventh Street, and will be open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. until Saturday, July 6.

All the money brought in from sales will go towards the ministry and increasing the church by 300 members.

Frank Jacquez, the state chair for Kairos, said there’s a lot of steps to meet that goal.

“In order for us to be able to accomplish that, we need to have 150,000 cookies. OK,” said Jacquez. “So 150,000, not dozen, but 150,000 cookies, we need to have 700 hours of prayer, 300 hours of training, and an additional basically 120 more individuals who’d be willing to go into the facility with us.”

Jacquez also said they need to have somewhere between $30-50 thousand to make that happen, which is how the firework fundraising tent came to be.

“It opened up the opportunity for us to set up, talk about the ministry, talk about all the ways that you can get involved in the ministry, and then utilize this as a fundraiser for the ministry itself as well,” said Jacquez.

The process with TNT started almost two years ago for Kairos.

This is the first time they’ve fundraised like this, and Jacquez said they’ll consider it again next year if they meet their goals.

“We’re hopeful that we’re gonna be able to fund one of our weekends, and that’s, ideally, if we can make it out of here talking about the ministry explaining all the ways that you can get involved, whether it be through prayer, whether it be through baking cookies or whether it be through buying fireworks, the result is we’re hoping we may be able to get one weekend paid for,” said Jacquez.

Kairos volunteers go into facilities on Thursdays and leave on Sundays, and Jacquez describes these experiences as one long story with 10 chapters delivered through talks, with tables of cookies for the inmates.

“Kairos, it means time. That’s what it means is time, and it doesn’t mean time as in what time is it today, but more God’s time and things happen in God’s time,” said Jacquez.
