Free Access To eBooks Via New Mexico State Library

NMDCA News:

SANTA FE — New Mexicans have access to free eBooks, audio books, and subscriptions to The New York Times courtesy of the New Mexico State Library. These resources can be accessed through the State Library’s website, nmstatelibrary.org.

Thousands of titles can be accessed for eBooks and audio books through The Palace Project, an app for downloading books. The New York Times subscription provides free use of the News, Cooking and Games sections of the newspaper.

“Having the ability to offer libraries, library patrons, and rural constituents access to digital services like The New York Times and The Palace Project is pivotal to the mission of the New Mexico State Library,” Deputy State Librarian Kate Alderete said. “Connection to a major publication like The New York Times for coverage of world and national events is essential to the health of a democratic society. And when the news bums you out, switch over to Games or Cooking or check out an eBook or audio book from The Palace Project.”

The Palace Project is an app-based eBook and audiobook lending service. Accessing the service is simple: download The Project Palace app on the App Store or Google Play, search for and select New Mexico State Library in the app and register your account for free. Thousands of books are available, and the app supports a variety of accessibility features, including iOS Voice Over and Android Talkback for those with visual impairments, Open Dyslexic, Sans Serif, and Serif font options, and color schemes also assist with viewing.

The New York Times digital subscription encompasses the newspaper, New York Times Cooking, and New York Times Games. New Mexicans can visit nmstatelibrary.org/nytimes and follow links to redeem daily codes that provide a free subscription. Patrons can read The New York Times magazine as well, and the cooking section includes a vast library of recipes. The Games section includes The New York Times Crossword, as well as brain-teasing games such as puzzles, Sudoku, and more.

“The State Library’s goal is to ensure equal access to fun and useful information for all New Mexicans,” Alderete said. She hopes people across the state take advantage of these educational and entertaining resources.
