Gadsden community block grant money decreasing this year

GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – Some programs that help with housing and community development in Gadsden will be getting less money this year. City leaders say The Department of Housing and Urban Development is sending less money to Gadsden for Community Development Block Grants.

With Gadsden considered an entitlement community, Ruth Moffatt with the city of Gadsden says city leaders will have to adjust to less money moving forward.

Funds provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, this money is designed to help cities develop communities and fund various programs like helping the homeless, park access, making sure the special needs population is taken care of and more. Ruth Moffatt, Gadsden Community Development Director says, this decrease is based on the number of cities that receive entitlement money.

“These dollars are not meant to replace other grant sources but it’s meant to walk along side of them and say hey, what your doing is great work and we are in this with you but again it’s divided according to the allocation that its dispersed from HUD,” says Moffatt.

Ruth Moffatt went on to say they will not pull funding from other programs but will us those funds as needed.
