Google and DHL’s Green Partnership for Global Shipping

  • Net-Zero Goal: Google aims for net-zero emissions across operations and value chain by 2030.
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel: DHL’s GoGreen Plus service uses SAF to cut CO2e emissions in air transport.
  • Successful Pilot: A four-month pilot project led to this long-term collaboration.

Google and DHL Team Up for Sustainable Shipping

DHL and Google have partnered to utilize the DHL Express GoGreen Plus service, employing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for express shipping of Google devices in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. This initiative is a part of Google’s strategy to promote decarbonization technologies in air cargo transportation.

Omar Molina, Director of Global Transportation at Google, said: “Google has a goal to achieve net-zero emissions across our operations and value chain by 2030. Optimizing how we transport Google devices around the world is a key part of this journey. That’s why we’re thrilled to collaborate with partners like DHL, who share our passion for Net-Zero. The SAF program is a big step forward in that direction.

John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, added: “By deploying SAF across our international network, we are pleased to offer the GoGreen Plus service to our long-standing partner Google. We are confident that this agreement and Google’s meaningful investment will encourage others to take the same initiative and drive the transition to low-emission transportation services using sustainable aviation fuel.

This collaboration builds on a successful pilot project from June to September 2023, where Google and DHL tested SAF’s viability. The pilot’s success led to Google’s commitment to expanding its partnership with DHL Express.

Launched in 2023, DHL’s GoGreen Plus service aims to reduce CO2e emissions through the use of SAF, supported by contracts with BP, Neste, and World Energy. SAF, produced from renewable feedstocks like used cooking oil and waste, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional aviation fuels derived from crude oil.

DHL’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 hinges on sustainable air transport solutions, given that around 70 percent of the company’s carbon footprint originates from its air network. This partnership with Google is a significant step towards creating more sustainable logistics operations.

The collaboration between Google and DHL is expected to set a precedent for other companies, encouraging broader adoption of low-emission transportation solutions and driving the transition to sustainable logistics.
