Google Hit With Widespread Outage

Google users looking for news Friday morning were left confused when searches came back with zero results.

The search engine’s news section appeared to be down for millions of users, with outage site Downdetector seeing a spike in reports compared to Google‘s usually-stable flat-line, starting around 8:00 a.m. ET.

As of 9:38 a.m. ET, the site appeared to have returned, showing results once more.

A major outage hit Google on Friday morning.

The outage lasted for around an hour, with some users on social media reporting that Google’s search function was also not working.

“There are no items to show,” search pages on the Google News site showed, along with an upside-down ice cream cone.

The empty feeds eventually repopulated, once again showing headlines from around the world.

“There was an issue that was briefly affecting some results on Google News, Discover and other products,” A Google spokesperson told Newsweek Friday afternoon. “We’ve fixed the issue and things should be working normally now.”
