Hidden historic car dealer sign uncovered in Newark renovation

Travis Wohlrab, a young entrepreneur from Newark, recently bought the Northside Laundry building at 419 North Main Street. While removing an old wooden sign, he discovered concrete lettering beneath it.

The sign revealed the emblem of Chief Pontiac and the words “McMann Pontiac Sales Company.” Wohlrab learned that Christie McMann sold Pontiac cars there from 1946 to 1954. He plans to keep the historic sign visible for a retro effect.

McMann started as a barber before opening McMann Pontiac Sales Company. His successful dealership thrived until he retired and sold the franchise to Leo Whelan. Wohlrab’s discovery highlights Newark’s rich automotive history.
