Hiring fair for tornado victims set for June 18 at Ardmore Convention Center

Nearly 50 employers are getting ready to help Oklahomans impacted by the devastating April 27 tornadoes. There’s a hiring fair coming up on Tuesday, June 18 at the Ardmore Convention Center.

The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (OESC) says it wants to offer many opportunities to storm victims.

“We want those folks that have been negatively impacted by this to know there’s help available for them,” David Crow with OESC said. “There are opportunities available for them.”

Crow says the OESC and other workforce agencies will be at the event on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“There are employers all across southern Oklahoma that have signed up for this within the last couple of days saying, ‘Hey. I want to be there. I want to be able to help these folks. I want to make sure they have employment.”

Employers like the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Mercy will attend to help several communities impacted by the April 27 tornadoes, which caused the Marietta Dollar Tree Distribution Center to close down.

“We are here to help the former employees at the Dollar Tree Distribution Center find work here in Oklahoma. We stand ready anytime there’s a disaster. Anytime there’s something unexpected that happens, we’re able to marshal those resources and get them together.”

The event will also offer resume tips, job interview advice and five layoff assistance sessions.

“They’ll be available in English, and in Spanish. I know we’re going to have a lot of people there who have Spanish as their only language. There will be translators available.”

Crow says normally, hiring events take two to three months to put together. This one is being organized in a matter of days.
