Houthis claim responsibility for attack on Merchant Ship in Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have claimed responsibility for an attack on a merchant ship in the Red Sea, as part of their ongoing campaign in support of Palestinians.

The attack, carried out using a naval drone, aerial drones, and ballistic missiles, targeted the Tutor ship, causing significant damage and flooding.

The incident occurred approximately 68 nautical miles southwest of the rebel-held port city of Hodeida, with the ship taking on water and no longer under the crew’s command. The attack marks the latest in a series of assaults on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which the Houthis claim are in solidarity with Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations and US Central Command (CENTCOM) have confirmed the attack, with CENTCOM reporting that the ship was struck by a Houthi “unmanned surface vessel” and sustaining severe damage. In response, CENTCOM has destroyed three anti-ship missile launchers and a Houthi drone in the past 24 hours.
