Google News Past newcomer-focused Angus Reid studies

Last month, Angus Reid published the results of a housing affordability study based on a survey of recent newcomers.

Recent immigrants and housing

This study revealed that close to two-in-five (39%) recent* Canadian immigrants said they are considering interprovincial migration due to the cost of housing in their current province.

*Recent is defined by this study as immigrants who have landed in Canada within the past 10 years

Note: Interprovincial migration is the practice of moving from one province in Canada to another.

More specifically, survey data reveals that the following percentage of surveyed Canadian newcomers – separated by years in Canada – either agreed or strongly agreed with the statement: “I’m seriously thinking of leaving [my province] because of the cost of housing here.”

10 years in Canada: 25% agree; 14% strongly agree

11+ years in Canada: 18% agree; 12% strongly agree

Where new Canadians find help when transitioning to life in Canada

Angus Reid also recently conducted a survey in partnership with Staples to understand Canadian parent and teacher perceptions, priorities, and challenges in the education and learning space.

According to this study, kids require additional support from their parents in learning. Though parents struggle with lack of time, finding time to support their children outside the classroom is considered necessary by both teachers and parents themselves.

Furthermore, the value of supporting kids as they move through teenage years into adulthood is recognized by teachers but less often supported by parents.
