Isha Ambani shares her IVF story of conceiving twins, calls Radhika Merchant a ‘close confidante’

Isha Ambani Piramal, daughter of Mukesh Ambani, has opened up about her experience with IVF (in-vitro fertilization) in a candid interview with Vogue India. She shared her journey of conceiving her twins, Aadiya Shakti and Krishna, through IVF, aiming to dispel the taboo around the subject.

Embracing Modern Technology

Isha emphasized the importance of normalizing IVF, saying, “I’m very quick to say that my twins were conceived via IVF because that’s how we’ll normalize it, right? Nobody should feel isolated or ashamed. It’s a difficult process. When you’re going through it, you’re physically exhausted.”

Her experience mirrors that of her mother, Nita Ambani, who also conceived Isha and her brother Akash through IVF. Nita has previously spoken about the emotional turmoil she faced when a doctor told her she would never be able to conceive.

“At the age of 23, I was shattered when I was told I would never be able to give birth. However, with the help of Dr. Firuza Parikh, who is one of my closest friends, I was able to conceive my twins!” Nita shared in an earlier interview.

Isha believes that modern technology should be embraced to help those struggling with fertility issues. “If there is modern technology in the world today, why not use it to have children? It should be something you’re excited about, not something you should have to hide. If you can find support groups or other women to talk to, the process can feel much easier,” she added.

Experts in the field agree with Isha’s stance. Dr. Nandita Palshetkar, Director of Bloom IVF India, stated, “Infertility is as common as people reporting diabetes, and we need to take it matter of fact. I really applaud Isha Ambani for coming out and saying that she had IVF babies because it should not be stigmatized.”

The Physical and Emotional Toll

The IVF process is known to be physically and emotionally exhausting. Hormone injections, numerous appointments, and the anticipation of success can be overwhelming. Dr. Palshetkar noted, “Couples are often apprehensive of opening up about their battle with infertility fearing judgment, further making it difficult for women to share their trials and tribulations.”Despite these challenges, the success of IVF has provided hope to many couples. “90% of mothers have a single baby, and 10% report twins and triplets. In most cases, people don’t announce that they’ve had IVF babies,” Dr. Palshetkar explained.

The Importance of Female Friendships

Beyond her journey with IVF, Isha also spoke about the importance of female friendships. She shares a close bond with her sister-in-law, Shloka Mehta Ambani, who married her twin brother, Akash Ambani.

“I was very lucky that the person who my brother decided to marry was my best friend, Shloka. Even right now, we’re sharing the house in London and we joke that we’re actually married to each other because both Akash and Anand are in Mumbai and we’re here with the kids,” Isha told Vogue India.

She also expressed her affection for Radhika Merchant, soon-to-be wife of her younger brother, Anant Ambani. “Anant has always been like the baby figure in my life, someone whom I’ve doted on, so I look at Radhika with a mothering eye. My mum, Shloka, and Radhika are my closest confidantes and my first line of friends,” she shared.

By sharing her story, Isha hopes to normalize IVF and provide encouragement to others facing similar challenges.
