Maritime Defeated at Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, NY – Last season, the Maritime College women’s lacrosse team and Merchant Marine met in the Skyline Conference Championship Game.  On Saturday afternoon, the Privateers and Mariners met for the first time since that contest with first place on the line.  The result, unfortunately, was the same, as Merchant Marine (8-2, 5-0 Skyline) earned a 20-4 win over Maritime (6-3, 3-1 Skyline) at Brooks Stadium.

Merchant Marine took an early 3-0 lead before Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) got the Privateers on the board at the 5:32 mark of the first quarter.  However, the Mariners responded with four straight goals to extend their advantage to 7-1 at the end of the quarter.  After Merchant Marine increased the margin to 10-1, Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net twice and Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) added another to bring Maritime within 10-4.

The Privateers would get no closer, though.  Merchant Marine’s Kaitlyn Latchaw scored with eight seconds left in the first half, then the Mariners rattled off nine unanswered tallies in the second half to notch a 20-4 victory.

Gay assisted on both of Nicolosi’s goals and finished with three points.  In addition to scoring, Lesiewicz led the Privateers with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.  She and Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) each recorded seven draw controls, and Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) had four ground balls.  Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (6-3) was credited with nine saves in the loss.

For Merchant Marine, Lauren Jablonski tallied eight points on six goals and two assists.  She also picked up three ground balls.  Latchaw scored four times, while Gianna Russo and Grace Picozzi each posted three goals.  Leslie Wysong had a team-high four ground balls to go along with three draw controls and three caused turnovers.  Goalkeeper Karianna Eagle (8-2) made nine saves for the Mariners.

After playing two straight on the road, the Privateers return to Reinhart Field on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. matchup with Mount St. Vincent (4-7, 2-3 Skyline).  The contest will be followed by the Maritime-Mount St. Vincent men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
