New program announced for SC offenders seeking employment

(WSPA) – The South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services (SCDPPPS) announced a new program aimed at helping offenders seek employment in the state.

The department said 21 laptops will be distributed to probation and parole county offices for offenders to use as they seek employment.

The laptops have a wireless modem and will have several programs already installed to help users create resumes, cover letter, PowerPoint presentations and other perform other tasks necessary while searching for a job.

Offenders can also use the laptops to participate in programs required of their supervision.

The SCDPPPS said, depending on usage, the laptops will be moved between county offices on a rotating schedule to improve access across the state. Use of laptops will be monitored.

According to the SCDPPPS, approximately 26% of the 22,610 active offender population is unemployed.
