Kabosu, a Shiba Inu dog, died on May 24 in front of his owner, Atsuko Sato, authorities said. Dog BlogKavos had leukemia and liver disease.
Mr. Sato announced Kabosu’s death with the following poem:
A soft light shines through the window. Outside the window, birds sing. A beautiful morning. While I stroke you, as if sleeping, she quietly passes away.

A farewell party for Kabosu is planned for Sunday at a Japanese florist.
In 2010, Sato uploaded an image of the dog to the internet, where it began to circulate on various social media platforms such as Tumblr and Reddit. In 2013, a particular image of Kabosu went viral and became an internet meme called “Doge.”
The image is accompanied by broken English text intended to convey the character’s inner monologue. Doge’s popularity exploded over the next few years, with big brands and advertisers using him in their campaigns.

In 2013, the meme also inspired the creation of the well-known cryptocurrency Dogecoin, which became the first meme coin. With the general rise of cryptocurrencies, Dogecoin has become relatively popular and has even been endorsed by Elon Musk, causing its value to skyrocket. The currency now has a market capitalization of over $22 billion.
Doge remains a popular item in internet culture, inspiring a variety of meme variants and templates. Doge also has supporting characters like Cheems, a Shiba Inu modeled after a real-life Hong Kong dog named Balltze.

Kabosu was adopted after her breeder went out of business, and according to Sato’s blog, she was taken to an animal shelter along with 19 other Shiba Inu dogs.
Many of the dogs were euthanized, but Kabosu was rescued by a volunteer group and adopted by Mr Sato in November 2008.

Sato-san and Kabosu-san formed one of Japan’s most popular pet blogs in the 2010s, but were not considered a meme within the country.
“To be honest, some of the photos seem strange to me, but they’re still funny! I’m very impressed with their technique and sense. No one around me knows about dojimemes. Maybe it’s because I live an analogue life that I don’t really understand memes,” Sato said. The Verge In 2013.
