Nova Scotia fishermen say they welcome news of a large-scale seizure of baby eels last week. Toronto Pearson International Airport.

But Stanley King of the Atlantic Elver Fisheries said the seizure by federal authorities was long overdue and came as the current elver fishing season was winding down.

The federal government shut down the lucrative commercial baby eel fishery on March 11 after violence and intimidation occurred during last year’s fishing season in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

of 109kg of eels seizedThe catch, also known as elver, was caught last Wednesday with the Department of Fisheries. Canada Border Services Agency.

Federal officials said the eel, which will be shipped overseas, has a value of $400,000 to $500,000.

King says the latest bust, while significant, represents only a fraction of the black locusts likely to have been illegally smuggled out of the country this year.

He is part of a group of commercial fishermen calling for stronger enforcement and tougher penalties for elver poaching in coastal rivers.
