Offaly man celebrates 40 years employment with renowned Tullamore firm

A BALLINAGAR man celebrated 40 years employment with one of Tullamore’s best known engineering firms recently. Martin Brophy has been working as a fitter-fabricator with Coughlan Engineering on Riverside since 1984.

Managing Director, Frank Mulligan, directors JJ Stapleton and Niall Mulligan and colleagues took a break from work to mark the occasion with a cake and celebration at their premises.

Coughlan Engineering was established over fifty years ago by the late Tommy Coughlan and his wife Ann also attended the ceremony. Well known business man Frank Mulligan took over Coughlan Engineering after the retirement of Tommy in 1998.

Martin Brophy has been a much valued member of staff there, staying loyal to the company throughout Celtic Tigers and recessions. A dedicated GAA supporter, he played football for Ballinagar for years in the 1980s and 1990s and was corner back on the Ballinagar team that won the Junior Football Championship in 1988. He was also the club secretary that year, remaining in that role until 1992.

Incidentally, Martin is not the longest serving worker in Coughlan Engineering. That accolade belongs to well known Tullamore GAA stalwart, Pat Conlon who is there 47 years.
