Rogers tops overall broadband experience, Bell best for fiber: Report

Opensignal has published its latest Canadian Fixed Broadband Experience Report, detailing the real-world performance of various internet products.

An important finding in this regard is report That includes the fact that Rogers offers the best overall broadband experience nationally. But while Rogers may be the best overall, he has the edge over Bell in terms of fiber experience.

Opensignal collects daily, individual measurements from over 100 million devices around the world to create these reports, which are used to analyze mobile and broadband user experiences. This report uses data collected from February 1, 2024 to April 30, 2024.

The report includes a market overview with some interesting details. First, the national report only looked at providers of similar size and geographic reach, which includes Bell, Rogers (including Shaw customers after the merger), Telus, and Starlink. Opensignal included many more players in its regional assessments. The report notes that Bell was until recently the largest fixed broadband provider in Canada. Rogers acquired Shaw and became the largest provider. Telus is third, but is the largest provider in Western Canada and has a growing fiber footprint.

Looking at the domestic experience, Rogers won three out of five categories: consistent quality, download speed, and video experience, although Bell took the peaks in download and upload speeds.

• Consistent quality: It measures how well your network can support common activation requirements, using six key metrics including download and upload speeds, latency, etc.
• Download Speed: It measures the typical everyday speed of a particular network in Mbps.
• Peak Download Speed: Measures the 98th percentile of the user speed distribution in Mbps.
• Upload speed: It measures the average upload speed in Mbps experienced by users of each Internet Service Provider.
• Video Experience: Quantify the quality of streamed video by measuring the actual video stream on your network.

There’s not much to talk about in the national textile category because Bell has taken it all by storm. Also, when it comes to national fixed wireless access, there’s little to say about Bell and Rogers Wireless Home His Internet Options, as they jointly won in every category except upload speed, with Rogers having a slight advantage. there is no.

On the regional side, things get a bit more interesting. For example, Eastlink won or co-won every category in Alberta except for upload speed. Eastlink was the only winner in the province for consistent quality, and Telus was the only winner for upload speed.

In BC, Rogers (including Shaw) wins for consistent quality and download speeds, and jointly wins with Telus for peak download speeds and video experience. Telus wins again with upload speeds.

There was a similar experience in Manitoba, where Rogers won some wins, except that instead of Rogers gaining upload speed, Rogers won jointly with Bell.

Ontario and Quebec had more diverse winners. In Ontario, Eastlink won consistent quality, Rogers won download speed, and Bell won upload speed. His other two categories were jointly won by three or more of his providers. In Quebec, Cogeco and Videotron shared the victory for consistent quality, with Bell having the best results for download and upload speeds.

Rogers won by a landslide in Saskatchewan, but in the Atlantic provinces, Rogers won for download speed and Bell for upload speed.
