A SOLDIER was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 yesterday when he appeared virtually before a master of the High Court in connection with the death of truck driver Neil Ballai.

Jalani Mapp was charged with causing death by dangerous driving; failing to stop after a road traffic accident; failing to render assistance following an accident; and driving without a certificate of insurance, police said in a media release yesterday.

He was charged by WPC Cobbler.

He appeared before Magistrate Margaret Sookraj Goswami.

Mapp was not called upon to enter a plea.

One of the conditions of bail was that he report to the police station nearest his home once a week.

Ballai, 55, of Spring Village, Valsayn, died on March 28 when the Kiss Baking Company Ltd truck he was driving was rear-ended by a black Hyundai Ioniq car near the Ato Boldon Stadium on the Solomon Hochoy Highway.

The Ioniq sped off.

Ballai died at the scene of the accident while another passenger in the truck sustained injuries in the incident and had to be hospitalised.

Mapp was detained and questioned shortly after the incident, police said.
