Some Tri-State car dealers facing issues because of massive cyberattack

BATAVIA, Ohio (WXIX) – Thousands of car dealerships across North America have faced disruptions in the last two weeks after a software provider was the victim of a cyberattack last week.

CDK Global was hit by back-to-back cyberattacks on June 19 causing problems for dealerships across North America.

Eric Holman, of Holman Motors in Batavia, said the company’s software is crucial for dealers because it manages sales, financing insurance, service and repairs.

“That means it’s the computer system that runs your entire organization – sales, service, parts and accounting,” Holman said. “If that goes down you go back in time twenty or thirty years and you’re using four-square that you hand write. That is no longer used today.”

Holman Motors was one local dealer affected by the attack. Wyler Group Cincinnati and Mercedes-Benz of Cincinnati and West Chester confirmed they were affected, but declined to go on camera.

Holman said it’s taking dealers with CDK Global software three times as long to sell a car.

“It’s a lengthy process and there are chances for mistakes,” Holman said.

CDK Global said its software systems won’t be back online before Sunday.

Holman said the timing couldn’t be worse – dealers are in the middle of the peak car buying season.
