Stone supplier fails to protect machinery

Following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), Dunmurry-based Collinwell Masonry Products has been fined for defective foundry machinery.

Lisburn magistrates this week fined the company £1,000 after it admitted one offence.

The court heard that during a visit to the factory on May 24, 2023, HSENI inspectors found three separate locations where employees had access to dangerous moving machine parts.

The access gates to the machines did not have effective safety interlock mechanisms: one gate had no interlock safety feature and the other two gates had ineffective or broken interlock mechanisms.

Without an effective safety interlock mechanism, employees could easily open the gate and access dangerous moving parts, exposing themselves to potentially fatal injuries.

HSENI has served three prohibition notices on Collinwell Masonry Products Limited, banning it from producing certain parts. plant No operations will be permitted until appropriate measures are taken to prevent access to dangerous parts of the machinery. HSENI had previously issued seven similar prohibition notices at the premises.

HSENI inspector Kevin Campbell said: “Employers have a legal duty to ensure that employees and other people are not exposed to the hazards caused by unguarded machinery.”

“If safety features are not properly maintained allowing workers to access hazardous areas, or if safety features are deliberately circumvented, serious accidents can occur.

“HSENI will not hesitate to recommend prosecutions against companies that repeatedly fail to provide a safe working environment for their employees.”
