Tehama County unemployment drops to 5.3 percent – Red Bluff Daily News

RED BLUFF — The unemployment rate in Tehama County has shown a significant decline over the past three months, plummeting from 6.9 percent in March to 5.3 percent in May.

According to preliminary data released by the California Employment Development Department on June 21, Tehama County’s unemployment rate has fluctuated in its state ranking. It stood at 40th in May, slightly dropping from 37th in April and 36th in March and February. The county’s lowest rank was 34th in January.

From April to May, mining and logging jobs increased by 25 percent. The second largest addition was federal jobs, at 15.8 percent. The third largest addition was mining, logging, and construction jobs, at 7 percent.

Wholesale jobs decreased by 5 percent, the most significant month-to-month drop and the only drop. There were no changes in information, financial activities, business and professional services, state, and several other categories.

Wholesale trade jobs saw the most significant decrease from May 2023 to 2024, down 17.4 percent. Leisure and hospitality jobs decreased by 12.3 percent, and non-durable goods jobs decreased by 11.4 percent. The most significant increase was in mining and logging jobs, at 36.4 percent.

Butte County ranked 34th in the state with 4.9  percent unemployment, a decrease from last month’s 5.7 percent. Shasta County’s unemployment decreased to 4.6 percent. Glenn, Plumas and Monetary ranked 43rd with 5.7 percent unemployment.

Imperial County had the state’s highest unemployment rate at 15.4.  Colusa County ranked 57th again with 11.9 percent unemployment, a decrease from 15.4 percent. Tulare County ranked 56th in the state with 9.3 percent unemployment.

Once again, San Mateo County had the lowest unemployment rate, at 2.9 percent. San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, and Marin ranked second with 3 percent, followed by Inyo and Napa with 3.1 percent.

Statewide unemployment was 4.5  percent, while U.S. unemployment was 4 percent.
