The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security has blamed the rise in the price of tomato products across Nigeria on the spread of tomato farm disease known as tomato Ebola or tomato leaf miner.
He revealed this through his official social media accounts on Monday.
Kyari was reacting to the astronomical rise in the price of tomatoes in Nigeria.
Kayyali said pest infestations in tomato farms have reduced the supply of tomato products, leading to increased prices.
“Many of our tomato farms are suffering from a serious pest infestation known as tomato ebola or tomato leaf miner.
“This has resulted in a significant reduction in tomato supply, leading to increased costs.
“Our ministry is taking immediate action to combat the issue. We have deployed agricultural experts to the affected areas to contain and eradicate the pest’s spread.”
“Furthermore, just as we have established a Ginger Late Blight Control Task Force, we are providing farmers with the resources and guidance they need to help them recover their crops as quickly as possible.
“We understand the impact this is having on your daily lives and are working tirelessly to resolve this situation and restore affordable tomato supplies,” he wrote.
